Dromid Hostel is uniquely situated within the heart of the Iveragh Peninsula in the South Kerry Gaeltacht located in the South West of Ireland.

This hostel is open to groups all year round and is especially suited to walking groups because of the many natural walks in the area, as well as  retreats and school outings because of access to a state of the art sports hall which adjoins the hostel.

Our hostel is the ideal location for enthusiastic mountain climbers, with the foot of Carrauntoohil only a 25-30 minute drive from our doorstep. Additionally, the Kerry Way walking track, one of Ireland’s longest signposted walking trails, loops around our picturesque setting, offering some spectacular scenery.

The renowned Ring of Kerry route passes within close range to our hostel, with it’s stunning views and unrivalled natural beauty, ideal for avid cyclists. Not only this, we are situated on the banks of the Inny River, very fitting for those who wish to relax and unwind while fishing.

The hostel is also suited to visitors who wish to visit the globally recognised Skelligs Rock, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site as we are a mere 25 minute drive from the departure points.

We are situated in the ONLY internationally recognised  Dark Sky Gold Tier Reserve in the whole of the Northern Hemisphere. The Dromid area has the highest reading in the reserve. The Kerry International Dark-Sky Reserve has been designated Ireland’s first International Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark Sky Association, one of only 3 GOLD TIER Reserves on the planet. The sky here in the South West region is simply stunning on a clear night, with many astronomical sights seen through the naked eye, as can be seen in the Grand Canyon or the desert plains of Africa. We offer state of the art equipment for keen astronomers looking to observe the magical celestial phenomena, with two advanced telescopes available.

For the seaside enthusiast, we are located 8-10 minutes from the village of Waterville, home to a wonderful blue flag beach, ideal for swimming, surfing or simply just a leisurely walk. Together with this, Ballinskelligs, Cahersiveen, Kells and Derrynane are home to some renowned beaches, all within close proximity to our hostel. These locations are not surprisingly highly saught after destinations when the sun shines.

Along with the hostel and sports hall, there are a range of community services and businesses in the complex. The Gteic building, which is part of the Gaeltacht Digital Network is located in the enterprise units. There is also a purpose built childcare facility and a project for the elderly comprising of 6 purpose built houses and a social centre.

For passionate historians, the Dromid area is the ultimate location. Cillín Liath is home to an ancient standing stone, a powerful witness to Ireland’s past. The stone is especially distinct, with ogham writing and a large cross in the centre. The standing stone is a must-see for many visitors, as it allows us to look back at Irish history before books and writing in an almost spiritual way. The South Kerry area as a whole is home to an immeasurable amount of archeological sites and monuments, with Dromid Hostel being the popular place to stay for these visitors.
